Ensuring Safe and Certified Gas Work
Safe Installation
When it comes to gasfitting, it's crucial to hire a licensed or certified gasfitter. This applies to the installation of pipework, gas appliances, flues, and any modifications. Always ask to see the gasfitter's current practicing license ID card to verify their credentials.
Certification Requirements
Since 1 July 2013, all gasfitting work must be certified. After connecting any gasfitting, the responsible individual must issue a Gas Safety Certificate (GSC). This certificate confirms that the gas installation or part of it is safe to use and that the gasfitting work has not negatively impacted any other part of the installation.
Additionally, Certificates of Compliance (CoCs) are required for any high-risk or general-risk gasfitting. These must be issued as soon as possible after the installation is connected to the gas supply, and no later than 20 days after. High-risk gasfitting is not considered complete until a CoC is issued.
For high-risk gasfitting, details of the work must be entered into the Electricity & Gas High-risk Database (EGHRD) within 20working days of issuing the CoC. This database makes certain details of the work publicly accessible, excluding personal information.
The Gas (Safety and Measurement) Regulations(GSMRs) mandate the need for CoCs and GSCs to ensure the safety of the gas installation. These certificates must be retained by the responsible person for at least seven years and made available upon request by the client or regulatory agencies.
Before 1 July 2013, gasfitting certification was managed by the Plumbers, Gas fitters, and Drainlayers Board (PGDB). The PGDB's online register includes details of certificates lodged with their system.
Regular Maintenance
It’s essential for homeowners, landlords, andtenants to ensure the safe operation and maintenance of gas appliances and equipment. Regular checks by an authorised and competent person are key to maintaining safety and efficiency:
- Annual Servicing: Flame effect heaters and LPG cabinet heaters should be serviced every year.
- Biennial Servicing: Other space heaters and water heaters should be serviced at least every two years.
- Regular Inspections: Whenever a licensed gas worker is at your home, ask them to check the safety of your gas appliances and installations.
Additionally, consider replacing old appliances and avoid buying second-hand ones to ensure they meet safety standards.
Blocked ventilation inlets or faulty appliances can lead to poor operation, gas leaks, fires, or carbon monoxide production, which can be fatal.
Conclusion
Ensuring that gas work is installed safely, properly certified, and maintained regularly is crucial for the safety and efficiency of your gas systems. Always hire licensed professionals, adhere to certification requirements, and schedule regular maintenance to keep your home safe and compliant.
