Last Chance to Speak Up: Shape the Future of Wellington’s Water (Submissions Close Tomorrow!)

Submissions close 21 April! Wellington City Council is deciding how our water will be managed and funded for decades to come.

Wellington is on the brink of making major decisions about how we manage, fund, and future-proof our water. And tomorrow, 21 April 2025, is your final chance to be part of the conversation.

Through the 2025 Long-Term Plan and the Local Water Done Well reform, Wellington City Council (WCC) is deciding how water services will be owned, upgraded, and paid for across the city. These decisions will impact everything from leak repairs to water bills for years to come.

What’s Being Decided?

WCC is asking for public feedback on three major options:

  1. A multi-council water organisation (WCC’s preferred choice)
  2. A Wellington-only water entity
  3. Keep the current setup with Wellington Water as contractor

Each option affects rates, service delivery, investment, and control.

Why It Matters

This is more than just planning — it affects your day-to-day life:

  • How quickly water issues get fixed in your neighbourhood
  • Whether your area gets priority upgrades
  • How much you pay in your water bill
  • How resilient Wellington will be in a drought or disaster

Councils are legally required to consider public feedback — and strong community input can influence the final decision.

How to Submit (It’s Easy — and Closes Tomorrow)

You don’t need to be an expert. All you need is a few minutes and your honest opinion.

Submit Online

Head to wellington.govt.nz and fill in the feedback form. You can comment on water reform, funding priorities, and the future of Wellington’s infrastructure.

Want to Speak to Council?

You can also request to present your submission in person by ticking the box at the end of the form. These are short 3–5 minute presentations to councillors — and a powerful way to make your voice heard.

What Happens Next?

Once submissions close:

  • Feedback is reviewed and summarised by council staff
  • Councillors use it to guide their decision-making
  • A final vote will take place by mid-2025
  • This decision will guide how water is delivered for the next 10–30 years

It’s Your Water. Have Your Say.

We don’t get many chances like this.
If you care about clean water, strong pipes, and a city that’s prepared for the future — make sure you speak up before tomorrow’s deadline.

Let’s build a water system that works for all of us.
